Oral contraception: Path-breaking contraception

Man-made contraception became a boon to people which helped them in preventing pregnancy. Oral contraception went a couple of step further and changed the image of contraception for good. They became a rage all over the world helping women deal with contraception conveniently. The pills can be taken orally like any other tablet medication and can provide almost 100% protection against pregnancy. Since the famous 'pill' was not found suitable for a small number of specific groups of women, the mini-pill to serve these groups was introduced. Both the pills perform their primary duty effectively of providing preventive cover against unwanted pregnancy. Yasmin, Dianette and Qlaira are a few known oral contraceptive pills.

The combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) or popularly known as 'the pill' is the earliest oral contraceptive pill. It contains two ingredients which are artificial forms of natural female hormones – an oestrogen and a progestogen. The success rate of protection is almost 100%. They have other health benefits for women such as treating painful periods, breast disease to name a few. The pill can be taken by a majority of women. The pill can be taken for three weeks followed by a gap of a week. The progestogen-only pill (POP) or popularly known as 'the mini-pill' is a revolutionary oral contraceptive pill. It contains only a progestogen but still records a 99% success rate of protection against pregnancy. It produces milder side effects and recommended for specific groups of women – those sensitive to oestrogen, breastfeeding, smokers, diabetics and some more. The pill has to be taken throughout the menstrual cycle without gaps. The mini-pill does not control the periods as effectively as the pill.
