Tips on Keeping Skin Moist and Healthy in the Scorching Heat of Summer

Proper skin care does not have to entail long hours at the derm clinic. There are a few basic steps that people can take in order to keep their skin healthy and delay the skin’s natural aging process. The hot summer sun can bear down on a person’s skin for long periods of time, which is why it is important to take measures against the adverse effects of too much sunlight, while helping the skin keep moisture in. Here are a few no-nonsense solutions to common skin risks.

  1. Keep Out of the Sun - Sunlight may be an excellent source of Vitamin D, but prolonged exposure to sunlight can also cause several skin problems that range from simple sunburns, wrinkles and age spots, to skin cancer. Experts recommend that it is ideal to use sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15 when doing outdoor activities, and to seek shade whenever possible. Certain items of clothing such as wide-brimmed hats, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts can also help keep the sun and harmful UV rays out.
  2. No Smoking - Cigarette smoking decreases blood flow in the skin by narrowing the blood vessels. This results in a reduction in the amount of oxygen in the skin, which results in older looking skin and wrinkles. Smoking also damages the fibers that give the skin its strength and elasticity. Also, the facial expressions that smokers make, such as pursed lips while inhaling and squinted eyes while keeping smoke out, can also lead to wrinkles.
  3. Treat Skin Gently - It may sound counter-intuitive, but daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on the skin. Hot water and long showers can actually remove oils the help keep the skin moist and supple. Limit bath times and bathe in warm water. After bathing, gently pat skin dry instead of roughly wiping in order to allow the skin to retain some moisture. When shaving, it helps to lubricate the skin beforehand with cream to avoid rashes.
  4. Eat a Skin-Friendly Diet - Research has shown that a healthy diet can help a person look and feel good. Plenty of fruits and vegetables can help give skin a natural glow. Foods rich in Vitamin C and low in fat has also been known to promote younger looking skin.
  5. Manage Stress Levels - The correlation between stress and skin conditions is evident in the workplace. Uncontrolled levels of stress can be harmful to the skin, causing it to become sensitive and prone to breakouts and other skin problems. It is important to take steps in order to manage stress. A positive attitude combined with reduced stress levels can lead to a healthy mind, which in turn encourages the growth of healthy skin.
The scorching heat of summer is something that people should not take for granted. By taking these simple steps people can assure themselves that they can enjoy all the fun that summer brings without having to worry too much about the risk of skin cancer, or other skin problems.
